A booker sends you a destination leg as an email and an attachment. You key it into your own system, run the delivery, and then spend a week reporting status back the way they want it and chasing an invoice they will not pay until you evidence the work. The move went fine. The paperwork around receiving and sending it is where your margin quietly goes, because every leg is retyped, every status is a separate message, and every payment is a follow-up.

If a leg means storage, the boxes and their locations are tracked on the same job and the storage billing runs itself, so held goods are a line on the record, not a favour you forget to charge for.

Because the survey, photos and sign-off are already on the job, the claim for payment is a file the booker cannot argue with, and the invoice comes off the same record.

Invoice and credit notes off the record
Bill the leg from the same job you delivered, with credit notes when they are due. The number you invoice traces to the work you evidenced, so the payment conversation is short.

Each leg carries its own profit and loss from resource-day costing, so you know which bookers and which lanes actually pay before you agree to the next one.
Milestones the sender trusts
Sea, air and road milestones on the shared record mean the party who sent you the leg watches it progress without asking. Trust that shows up as repeat work.

Agency work compounds. If the record travels with it.
Bookers send more to the agent who is easy to work with: one record, status without chasing, an invoice they can pay on sight. An email leg gives you none of that.
